JAMES EARL RAY: THE ESCAPE FROM BRUSHY MT. STATE ON 6-10-77. ©

Painted by JAMES EARL RAY – AUGUST 1995.   This painting was made using acrylics on a 9 x 12 inch canvas cloth.

This painting is unique.  It was painted by one of the most controversial prison inmates in the history of the U.S. criminal justice system to commemorate and depict his escape from a maximum-security penitentiary.

It was June 9, 1977 and James was in the middle of an interview with PLAYBOY magazine. When the writer asked him if he had any plans to escape from prison … he answered No!

The following day – June 10, 1977 the writer arrived at the prison and was told that he could not meet with James Earl Ray because he had escaped from the facility.  This is a true story and you can read the longer version in the Playboy magazine interview – Vol. 24 No 9.  September 1977.

TRUFFLES PRACTICES CAT YOGA © MEDITATION

Painted by JAMES EARL RAY – NOVEMBER 1995.   This painting of my cat TRUFFLES demonstrating the Ancient Art of Cat Yoga © was made on a wooden plate assembled in the prison workshop.  It rests on a wooden A-frame.

JAMES EARL RAY painted over a pencil sketch – It is one drawing turned up-side down.

THE COMMISSIONER SENT THIS LETTER TO JAMES EARL RAY INFORMING HIM THAT HIS REQUEST FOR A MEDICAL FURLOUGH WAS DENIED – DECEMBER 5, 97.

This is the actual letter that James had “ smuggled ” out of his prison cell.  He wanted me to post it on the Internet and then save it for use in this book.

JAMES EARL RAY wrote a message using a Secret Code and placed it inside this Envelope.  The coded message said to “ LOOK – UNDER – THE – CHRISTMAS – SEALS ”  This envelope was opened and the letter inside was stamped “ INSPECTED ” – but the prison guards did not know the secret code and it appeared to be an ordinary letter.   No one suspected a thing.

The letter was sent to Jerry Ray.  After he decoded the secret message – he followed the instructions and peeled back the Christmas Seals.   His brother James had typed a new message that remained undetected until Jerry looked under the Christmas seals.

You can read the message that James placed there … when the book is published.  There were several of these letters written and they have never been seen or published before.  Along with the true story that goes with them.
